The world has lost a beloved leader and a hometown hero. Former U.S. President James Earl "Jimmy" Carter passed away peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 29, at the age of 100, at his home in Plains, Georgia. Surrounded by his family, Carter's death marks the end of a remarkable life that spanned a century, one that touched the hearts of millions, both near and far.
Carter, the 39th president of the United States, is the longest-lived president in American history. His time in the White House, from 1977 to 1981, was defined by both triumphs and challenges, including the Iranian hostage crisis and economic struggles. Yet, it was his deep character-marked by integrity, humility, and an unwavering commitment to peace-that earned him admiration far beyond his years in office.
Even after leaving the presidency, Carter remained active in humanitarian work, founding The Carter Center and dedicating much of his life to global peace, health initiatives, and the eradication of disease. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his tireless efforts, solidifying his place as one of the world's most respected figures.
Though Carter achieved international recognition, he never lost his connection to the small town of Plains, Georgia, where he was born and raised. For many, Jimmy Carter was not just a president, but a neighbor, a friend, and a symbol of the values that make small towns so special.
In honor of Carter's passing, President Joe Biden has declared Jan. 9 as a National Day of Mourning. A state funeral will be held in Washington, D.C. on that day, with services set for
10 a.m. (EST) at the National Cathedral. Following the service, Carter's final journey will take him back to his hometown of Plains. His remains will arrive at Lawson Army Airfield at
2 p.m. and will be transported by motorcade to Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains for a private funeral service at 3:45 p.m.
Residents of Plains and beyond are invited to pay their respects as the motorcade passes through the town, where Carter's final resting place is located. The U.S. Navy will honor the late president with a missing man formation flyover just before Carter is interred at his home. It will be a fitting tribute to a man who served his country with distinction, both as president and as a member of the U.S. Navy.
In lieu of flowers, the Carter family has requested that donations be made to The Carter Center, 453 John Lewis Freedom Parkway N.E., Atlanta, GA 30307.
As the world mourns the loss of former President Carter, his legacy of service, humility, and kindness will continue to inspire future generations.
