God Is!

Series: Mountaintop Musings | Story 27

Over the years I have probably met just two or three people would truly say they do not believe in God, or some semblance of the God of the Bible. When people tell me they do not believe in God, I often ask them what they attribute the existence of life to, or how the stars are hung in space to create what we call the zodiac. Usually, they come around to admitting there must be some type of causal agent, but they will not admit to the existence of One so powerful He can speak the universe and all that is in it will come in to being from nothing. I am thankful that most people do not believe the fairy-tale of macro-evolution as we have been brainwashed to believe over the past 250 years.

The Bible starts off by stating, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” The existence of God is taken for granted; the Bible never tries to “prove” there is a God. However, it does show us that there must be a God. Consider the question, “Who made the world?” It could not come into existence by itself no more than you or I are self-created. Psalm 19:1 tells us the “heavens declare the glory of God.” Yes, the existence of the complex universe speaks to the existence of a Creator. During the French Revolution one of the members of the “reformers” told a poor peasant Christian farmer “they were going to destroy every church building, burn every Bible and remove from France everything that speaks of God.” To this the poor man said, “Then you will have to pull down the stars as well!”

Another question I ask people to consider is, “Why do people from every tribe and nation have something in them that craves/desires a “god”? The most isolated people groups in the world all have a “Supreme Being” that they worship. It could be an animal, a craved idol, their leaders, but all people groups worship something. David Livingstone who spent 30 years of his life in the African bush said he never “found a heathen tribe who did not have some ideas of God.”

An atheist says there is no god. In Psalm 19:1 God says, “the fool has said in his heart there is no God. “People say how can you know God exists, you cannot touch him or see him.” You cannot see the wind, but you feel and see its effects, don’t you? Or air, you cannot see or feel air but the fact you breathe it in and live by absorbing its oxygen, proves it is real. We know God exists because of the impact He has on the lives of those who follow Him.

When you look at the complexities of a living cell, or how our bodies transmit pain through the nerves, or the operations of the mind, how can you say it has all happened by accident or chance? I like to show children a straight pin, or a paper clip and ask them how it came into existence. They may have a few details mixed up, but without exception they tell me it involved mining, forging and something to machine/make it. They are not ignorant. I then ask them how much more complex their body is than a paper clip. They always “get it”; That man is uniquely created in the image of God, male and female.

In Acts 17 the Apostle Paul had this to say to the people of Athen, “Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: “People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: to an unknown god. So, you are ignorant of the very thing you worship—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you.

“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’

“Therefore, since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill. In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”

Yes, God exists. If you have received Jesus Christ as Savior, He exists inside of you through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit! If He is not your Savior, why not invite Him in today?
