The Cascade High School boys' basketball season began last Friday as the Badger JV team welcomed Helena Christian for their season opener.
It was a successful first game and the Badgers came out on top 47-43. Josh Creveling led the home team's scoring with 15, including sinking 8 of 11 free throws. Lane Ethridge scored 13 points, Deyton Raether added 4 and Peyton Hauk added 2 points, while being the only Badger player to not have a turnover. Trent Lane played his first game as a high schooler and contributed 8 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Conner Mann's return to the court was also impressive as he added 5 points and pulled in 13 rebounds of his own.
Saturday the Badgers were back on the court as the team welcomed East Helena High. The JV Badgers started things off and had a rough first half with plenty of early season mistakes. The Badgers ended the 1st half down 21-42 and had little luck defending East Helena in the post. The 2nd half would be a different story as the Badgers came out of the locker room inspired and held their opponents to a 2-point 3rd quarter. In the end the JV boys outscored EHHS 25-12 in the 2nd half, but the rally wasn't enough, and the final tally saw the JV slip to 1-1 overall with a final score of 46-54.
Lane Ethridge sank four 3 pointers and led all scorers with 18 points. Trent Lane added 9 points of his own and had another big night rebounding the ball, ending with 14 boards. Peyton Hauk played a well-rounded game. He scored 7, dished out 8 assists and added 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Deyton Raether added 4 points off the bench and was a critical piece of the improved 2nd half Badger defense as he shut down the opponent's post offense.
The last game of the weekend saw the Varsity team make their season debut. East Helena brought over a great shooting squad that managed to knock down twelve 3 pointers in the game. However, our Badgers built a big lead early and it was enough to stop a fierce 4th quarter rally and begin the season with a 78-77 victory.
Gavin Gilham started his Senior year off strong as he led the Badgers with 21 points, 14 rebounds and 7 assists. Caiden Sekuterski hit a trio of 3 pointers and finished with 19 points. Tyler Lane had a good all-around performance, scoring 14 points while adding 7 steals, 6 blocks and 5 rebounds. Kaden Jorgenson was the 4th Badger to finish with double figures as he added 10 followed by Brent Ethridge who scored 8 and had 9 rebounds. Ian Mckamey added 6 points and 5 rebounds off the bench for the Badgers.
The boys will get their first taste of the road this coming week as we are scheduled to travel to Big Sandy on Friday, December 15th followed by a trip up to Sunburst on Saturday.
