The Cascade Badger Junior High Football Team opened their home slate on Friday against division newcomer, the Manhattan Christian Eagles. The Badgers put forth a solid effort and emerged with the victory 36-8. The win improved the Badgers record to 2-0 following the Badgers win against rival Simms in their opener.
This year's edition of the Junior High Badgers is younger than in recent years but the Badgers continue to turn in solid performances on both sides on the ball. Defensively, the Badger line was anchored by Kooper Coates and Jason Brooks, who were constantly in the opponent's backfield, pressuring the quarterback and preventing the Eagles from establishing any rhythm on offense. The Badgers saw strong defensive performances from Linebacker Kael Smith and Safety Isaac Edmundson. Smith's strong play put him in position to lead the team in tackles for the game, where Edmundson's play in defending the pass allowed just one opponent reception while breaking up several other attempts.
When the Badgers possessed the ball, they were balanced and efficient. As a team, the Badgers rushed for 177 yards and passed for 100 more. The Badger offense was led by Quarterback Isaac Edmundson who had touchdown runs of 5 and 12 yards while throwing two touchdown passes of 70 and 15 yards. Kalen Vanek, was also a big offensive contributor, scoring on a 46-yard run and was on the receiving end of the 70-yard passing play. Owen Sivertson added an acrobatic 15-yard touchdown reception and two extra-point receptions, while Smith added 68 rushing yards, all behind solid line play by Coates, Brooks, Abby Lemanski and Owen Mann.
The Badgers continue their schedule on Tuesday at the Shelby Coyotes and will be back home for the Homecoming game on September 15th against the Lone Peak Big Horns.
