  • Stormy Weather

    Ray Castellanos, Courier Reporter|Jun 15, 2023

Heavy rains hit Cascade Thursday afternoon, causing minor flooding on the north end of town. All afternoon the storm had been forming over the Adel Mountains, dark looming clouds threatening with deep rumbling thunder. Then, the rain came sweeping down in torrents, making driving difficult, windshield wipers being ineffective against the rain falling in sheets, and people caught outside scrambling for shelter. Except for the flooding, however, there was no major damage. Weather alerts later...

Met up with Co-President of the Dearborn Garden Club ,Carol Brady, Sunday afternoon as she was working on Joe's Trail, this year's "President's Project" that she has undertaken with Co-President, Charlene Moug. In fact, she was still at it that evening, as I spotted her doing her thing at the Railroad Park! Check out their...

  • History Of Juneteenth

    JUNETEENTH.Com|Jun 15, 2023

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation – which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union tro...

  • Things You Might Not Have Known About History

Nancy Royan, Librarian, Wedsworth Memorial Library|Jun 1, 2023

Over 2,400 years ago a Greek writer named Herodotus collected and reported eye-witness accounts of battles and other past events. He then analyzed their causes and effects. This essentially marked him as the world’s first true historian. Herodotus journeyed across Greece and the Mediterranean collecting all kinds of info, such as local customs and culture. In 440 BC, Herodotus ‘published’ his work by reading aloud to spectators at the Olympic Games. He called this work ‘Histories’ which means ‘inquiry’ in ancient Greek. His work tells us a lo...
